Huning Decorations has been in existence for almost 100 years, and now specialise in recreating historic paint schemes and restoration of painted finishes. The firm was founded in 1912 by Friedrich Johann Huning in Brockhagen, Westfalia in Germany. An older son Friedel was apprenticed in 1934 with the intention of taking over the business, but after his death in Russia in World War II, Wilm Huning started working with his father in 1943. In Germany, all trades and crafts have been rigidly controlled by centuries-old guilds, and to open and run a business it was necessary to attain the meister qualification. For Wilm, this involved a lengthy and intensive apprenticeship, learning age-old skills and use of materials, including the mixing of their own paints using traditional pigments and methods. Wilm qualified as 'Mahlermeister' (master decorator) in 1959 at the Handwerkskammer in Bielefeld, Germany, since which he has worked extensively as a decorator in Germany, Holland, France and Great Britain. He has also worked as Technical Advisor for a Dutch paint company, and as a teacher. Joy Huning studied at Bath Academy of Art, in Corsham, with Kenneth Armitage, amongst others, after which she spent two years working in an atelier in Paris, with the Hungarian sculptor Laszlo Szabo. She has worked on many notable projects in the field of specialist decorating, as well as being a practising artist. Her particular specialities are marbling, graining and colour matching. With a foundation based on the unique combination of Joy and Wilm's talents, Huning Decorations are well known in the field of specialist decoration, and have completed major projects in some of the country's most prestigious and best-known properties. Skills covered include graining, marbling, gilding, stenciling, murals, trompe loeil, glaze effects and decorative painting; copying from existing materials or finishes; colours hand mixed to match on a small or large scale; creative work with murals, stencils and colour schemes. Joy and Wilm were joined six years ago by their daughter Saskia Paterson, and more recently by their son Chris Huning. | ||
