Rance marbled columns
The dark columns are marbled with a Rance marble finish
The columns at the Sheldonian were painted with a Rance marble effect, the style of the marbling being appropriate for the period of the redecorated scheme.
Reference for the style of the marbling was taken from the Library at Lincoln Cathedral which has original marbling from the Wren period.
