Stencilling

Cirencester Parish Church

Recreation of painted design to slate panelling in Cirencester Parish Church

Work in progress recreating the stencilled pattern on slate dado running around the chancel

Completed restoration of the stencilled scheme

We were asked to recreate the stencilled design on the slate panelling that had been exposed behind the altar when it was moved forward. The original stencilled slates around the sides of the chancel were to be cleaned and then the design copied on to those running behind the altar, which were a natural slate colour. The work in progress photo shows the left hand original painted panel and the stencils in place on the plain panels. The finished photo shows the complete project. The panel at the right hand side of this photo was a half original panel and the left hand side had to be matched to the original half.
